State Champions! Southern Team Wins Big at K'NEX STEM Challenge
(Video above)
Student teams from grades 4-8 were challenged to create an environmentally friendly vehicle in just 2 hours with K’NEX rods, connectors and motors. Each team had to prepare a blue print and a 2 minute presentation on how their model answered the challenge.
Each vehicle had to meet several requirements which included being able to move at least 4 feet across a table and beat at least one obstacle chosen by the team.
Governor Tom Corbett was also at the event to meet and talk to students about their projects. He says that these students are the key to a successful future in technology.
“They’re competing with something not on the athletic field,” Corbett said, “They’re competing with brains, they’re competing with their ingenuity, they’re competing with their science and their technology and engineering and math, but really what they’re competing is for jobs in the future and that`s really what this is about.”
Teams were judged on creativity, teamwork, challenge success, design and presentation.
The first place winners received a 500 dollar K’NEX shopping spree for their teacher and a thunderbolt strike roller coaster building set for each team member.

Congratulations are extended to the members of Southern Columbia Area Middle School's Grades 6-8 K'NEX team on winning the first-ever, Pennsylvania STEM Design Challenge! More than 300 students gathered at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology to compete in the finals. The students were members of first- and second-place teams from regional competitions, held earlier this spring.

Student teams from grades 4-8 were challenged to create an environmentally friendly “people mover.” The vehicle had to be able to travel at least four feet across the table and had to overcome at least one obstacle (hill, curves, landforms, etc.) Each team also had to prepare a blue print and a two-minute presentation on how their model answered the challenge. Obstacles were chosen and designed by the team. Model UN
Our SCA High School offers a lot of great opportunities for our enrichment students to join. Today our Model UN team joined over 150 future delegates at Bloomsburg University's annual High School Model United Nations Conference. This program is designed to stimulate awareness of global issues and provide participants research, analytical and problem-solving skills. Great job everyone. Mr. McCoog was happy to see the gavel back home at Southern. Thanks to Bloomsburg University and everyone else who helped make it a great day.
More information from the day's event can be found here on Bloomsburg's Tumblr Page.
Good Luck!
Our High School Forensics Team will be competing in their last match of the season this Saturday. We wish them all the best of luck. Information about the end of the year banquet will be coming home with students shortly.

April Updates
K-8 students are continuing working on their Mythology projects. Students are in the middle of conducting research for the character they will be representing for our mythology event. Invitations will be sent home in a few weeks for dinner with the gods. Right now we are looking at May 28th at 6:00. Students have studied Monsters, Heroes, and Greek culture.
Academic Competitions
Our K'NEX STEM Challenge Winners will be competing at the state level at Harrisburg University on May 2nd. We wish them the best of luck.
We are also giving our warmest wishes to our Computer Fair Winners will be competing at the state level at Dickinson University on May 21st.
High School Updates
Our High School Forensics groups will be competing in one more event at the end of April. We are looking towards May 4th as a Parent Night and Awards Evening.
Independent Study students should be working on finalizing their papers. The school year is rapidly winding down, and we will be setting a date for final presentations shortly. I can not wait to see your final work.
Our Diversity group, PRIDE, had a special guest speaker Danny Roth. Mr. Roth offered us a new perspective on learning to love and respect oneself. His thought provoking talk taught us to stand up for victims of abuse, and the anti-bully movement. A big thank you to him and Dr. Mary Harris for arranging this opportunity for us.
Finally a big congratulations to our High School students who recently competed at FBLA State Leadership Conference. I have the honor of being a state judge each year and chaperone for our students. I am always impressed with our young professionals across the state. Students are doing amazing things. Southern Columbia is sending seven students to the national competition in June. This is the largest number we have ever sent. Great job students!

Fire, Water, Lightning
After the winter that never seemed to end, we are finally experiencing some beautiful Spring weather. Persephone must be visiting her mother again! During recess some of our students have played mythology based playground games that we created in class. The first is a nod to rock, paper, scissors..
Fire, Water, Lightning
Game Rules:
1. Divide into two teams
2. Each team must line up on opposite sides of the field. Together the team decides who they will represent (Poseidon, Hades, or Zeus)
Remember: Poseidon beats Hades, Hades beats Zeus, Zeus beats Poseidon
A. Poseidon:Student twists to splash a water wave with arms (beats Hades)
B. Zeus: Student stands on a Toes and throws lightning bolt down (beats Poseidon)
C. Hades: Student crouches and shoots imaginary fire (beats Zeus)
3. Carefully the teams march up to the center of the field. On the count of three they represent their 'god'. The team that has the winning hand chases the losing team back to their start lines. If they tag any of the fleeing opponents, they must join their team. The game ends when one team captures all members. If both teams draw the same god at the middle they go back to starting line and try again.
Other Creative Recess Games Included: Capture the Golden Fleece, and Pegasus Ball

The Shields of Sparta
We had a fun day in the fourth grade classroom! One of our students brought in an apple pie to celebrate PI day during lunch. Thanks P! We greatly enjoyed it.
We also had another small treat as our own chefs prepared ambrosia (the food of the gods). They will perfect the reciepe for our future dinner guests.
We are continuing our study on Classical Greece. Students are learning of education, history, and focusing in on mythology.
Today we learned about the city state Sparta and created our own Greek shields. Students designed their own symbols and some included secret messages using their knowledge of the Greek Alphabet. Some of the students researched ancient designs for their creations, while others added a modern day twist. Nice job kids.
Next week our focus will switch back to research of greek heroes, gods, and monsters.
