Model UN

Our SCA High School offers a lot of great opportunities for our enrichment students to join.   Today our Model UN team joined over 150 future delegates at Bloomsburg University's annual High School Model United Nations Conference. This program is designed to stimulate awareness of global issues and provide participants research, analytical and problem-solving skills.  Great job everyone. Mr. McCoog was happy to see the gavel back home at Southern. Thanks to Bloomsburg University and everyone else who helped make it a great day.

More information from the day's event can be found here on Bloomsburg's Tumblr Page.

Good Luck!

Our High School Forensics Team will be competing in their last match of the season this Saturday. We wish them all the best of luck.  Information about the end of the year banquet will be coming home with students shortly.

April Updates

K-8 students are continuing working on their Mythology projects. Students are in the middle of conducting research for the character they will be representing for our mythology event.  Invitations will be sent home in a few weeks for dinner with the gods. Right now we are looking at May 28th at 6:00. Students have studied Monsters, Heroes, and Greek culture.

Academic Competitions
Our K'NEX STEM Challenge Winners will be competing at the state level at Harrisburg University on May 2nd. We wish them the best of luck.

We are also giving our warmest wishes to our Computer Fair Winners will be competing at the state level at Dickinson University on May 21st.

High School Updates

Our High School Forensics groups will be competing in one more event at the end of April. We are looking towards May 4th as a Parent Night and Awards Evening.

Independent Study students should be working on finalizing their papers. The school year is rapidly winding down, and we will be setting a date for final presentations shortly. I can not wait to see your final work.

Our Diversity group, PRIDE, had a special guest speaker Danny Roth. Mr. Roth offered us a new perspective on learning to love and respect oneself. His thought provoking talk taught us to stand up for victims of abuse, and the anti-bully movement. A big thank you to him and Dr. Mary Harris for arranging this opportunity for us.

Finally a big congratulations to our High School students who recently competed at FBLA State Leadership Conference.  I have the honor of being a state judge each year and chaperone for our students.  I am always impressed with our young professionals across the state. Students are doing amazing things.  Southern Columbia is sending seven students to the national competition in June.  This is the largest number we have ever sent. Great job students!

Fire, Water, Lightning

After the winter that never seemed to end, we are finally experiencing some beautiful Spring weather.  Persephone must be visiting her mother again! During recess some of our students have played mythology based playground games that we created in class.  The first is a nod to rock, paper, scissors..

 Fire, Water, Lightning
Game Rules:

1. Divide into two teams

2. Each team must line up on opposite sides of the field. Together the team decides who they will represent (Poseidon, Hades, or Zeus)

Remember: Poseidon beats Hades, Hades beats Zeus, Zeus beats Poseidon

     A. Poseidon:Student twists to splash a water wave with arms (beats Hades)
     B. Zeus: Student stands on a Toes and throws lightning bolt down (beats Poseidon)
     C. Hades: Student crouches and shoots imaginary fire (beats Zeus)

3. Carefully the teams march up to the center of the field. On the count of three they represent their 'god'. The team that has the winning hand chases the losing team back to their start lines. If they tag any of the fleeing opponents, they must join their team. The game ends when one team captures all members. If both teams draw the same god at the middle they go back to starting line and try again.

Other Creative Recess Games Included: Capture the Golden Fleece, and Pegasus Ball
